Perhaps we should call it Watershed Earth. We're made of water, totally dependent on it, yet it in turn depends on us to play our part in a good way. Mother Ocean is the primary regulator of Watershed Earth. But the marine news is heartbreaking. Ocean defenders Michael Stocker, Anne Rowley and David Helvarg illuminate both the peril of noise and plastics pollution and the promise they see in the Seaweed Rebellion to save Mother Ocean, and ourselves.

Blue Frontier Campaign
The Blue Frontier Campaign was founded in 2003 by David Helvarg, author of Blue Frontier - Saving America's Living Seas. It works to support seaweed (marine grassroots) efforts at the local, regional and national level, with an emphasis on bottom up organizing to bring the voice of citizen-activists into national decision-making that will impact our public seas. There are now some 1200 blue groups working on ocean and coastal conservation but largely operating in isolation, and with little coordinated effort among them. Blue Frontier's mission is to strengthen this ocean constituency through building unity, providing tools, and enhancing public awareness of both the challenges and solutions being offered by these groups to the various threats facing our living oceans.
The Seaweed Revolution is rising, led by, among others, David Helvarg. Surfer, diver, former Ocean Beach resident and war correspondent.
So far, Blue Frontier has identified about 2,000 seaweed groups, ranging in size from a few dozen activists to big-membership organizations such as the Ocean Conservancy. In San Diego, he works with San Diego Baykeeper, the Surfrider Foundation, the Environmental Health Coalition and other organizations.
It was in Mendocino that the Seaweed Rebellion first began back in 1986
Eleanor Lewallen's Ocean Gifts
Eleanor Lewallen, was an original founding member of the Ocean Protection Coalition, Mendocino's first Ocean Conservation group. The late 1970's saw campaigns to Save The Whales and Stop (Ban) Offshore Oil.
Eleanor and John Lewallen founded Mendocino Sea Vegetables in 1980. John has authored many articles on Ocean Protection, many many official comments enterred into the public record, and been interviewed for radio spots, magazine, newspaper, and TV.
Together John and Eleanor authored the "Sea Vegetable Gourmet Cook Book and Wild Crafter's Guide" Soft cover 128 pages 8.5X11" $19.95 ISBN 0-9647643-7-7. Definitive and joy full - it is a must have addition to anyone's wildcrafted nutrition book shelf. You can order the book or view the book's Table of Contents here.
Though even before this time, Ocean Harvest Sea Vegetable Co owned at the time by Victor, was harvesting locally in the intertidal zone, each company defined it's own harvest areas. John and Eleanor made a viable company out of Mendocino Sea Vegetable Company near the beaches of Elk, California before Victor would near Mendocino.
But Victor was the first seaweed wildcrafter of the bunch. He and Betsy were not together yet, she came into the company later and bought it from him. Along the way, everyone enjoyed the added benefits of excitement, health and nutrition.
Today Ocean Harvest Sea Vegetable Company continues to carefully harvest the wild seaweed off the Mendocino Coast. Terry Nieves, owner of Ocean Harvest Sea Vegetable Company and a diligent harvester, also coordinates the Nutrition and Organic Food Program in Mendocino County bringing gardens to the schools, healthy food into the cafeteria lunches, and monthly harvest activities with local chefs, farmers, and the classroom.
Rising Tide Sea Vegetables is a thriving cottage industry perched on one of the cleanest coastlines in the world – the wild and beautiful north coast of California and has been fine-tuning the techniques involved in wildcrafting, drying, and storing sea vegetables since 1981. Owners Larry Knowles and Erica Fielder are active ocean protectors involved in the battle to halt the onslaght of Oil and Wave Energy Conversion schemes that threaten the north coast and Cetacean migrations.
All Northern California Pacific Coast seaweed harvesting companies have a deep sense of resource protection and sustainable harvest levels, all harvesting of sea vegetables is done by hand.
The 'Save the Whales' campaign of the 1970's - 1980's, and the 1989 Offshore Oil Hearings held in Fort Bragg galvanized ocean protection in California's North Coast population.

"Super Foods From the Ocean - Seaweed Exploration on the Mendocino Coast"
A four hour class from the Vibrant Living Expo 2009 at the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute, known internationally as the premier raw organic vegan chef school, featured Terry Nieves, owner, Ocean Harvest Sea Vegetable Company:
The exciting 4 hour introduction to seaweeds from the Northern California Coast was presented by Terry Nieves. Terry is a raw food enthusiast and seaweed wildcrafter, who offers a wealth of knowledge about seaweeds and their nutritional value. Terry is a member of the Seaweed Sterwardship Alliance, and works with Mendocino County Schools, educating students about nutrition and gardening.
The four hour class offered a walk along the shore at low tide where people were introduced to several varieties of seaweeds growing wild in the Pacific Ocean learned about seaweed harvesting and drying techniques. Everyone came away from the class with spirited smiles and knowing several reasons why seaweeds are the ultimate wild, raw, green superfoods of the ocean, providing trace minerals, enzymes and vitamins in a condensed form, for both eating and for use in the bath! Attendees also had the opportunity to taste several seaweeds and dishes made with seaweeds.
