For the best continuous stream of consciousness on the MLPA-I trickery from stakeholders involved in the process since it's beginnings visit: The Califiornia Fisheries Coalition main site:
"The California Fisheries Coalition includes 27 recreational and commercial fishing associations and businesses. We have participated in all aspects of the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative process since Fall 2004. We have invested hundreds of hours to attend meetings, analyze options, map key fishing grounds, and develop a recommended network of central coast Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Our objective is to see a full and balanced implementation of the MLPA. This Act seeks to protect diversity of marine life and "help sustain, conserve and protect" marine populations. It requires monitoring and adaptive management of MPAs. It is not intended to duplicate pre-existing comprehensive protections that have been in place on the ocean for many years."

Barry Munitz
Remember him?
#2 in the MAXXAM Empire, moved on (to the dismay of many) to be Chancellor of the Regents for the entire UC school system. His claim to fame while there is that he privatized the UC System's information network.
Simultaneous to the selection of Dr. Munitz' as Chancellor, the State Senator Barry Keene introduced and later passed as Senate-Assembly Joint Concurrent resolution that would make the Chancellor of the CSU system the head of a to-be-formed Center for the Resolution of Environmental Disputes.
Barry Munitz, Vice-president and number two man of the MAXXAM empire resigned from MAXXAM to become the Chancellor of the California State University system, the largest university system in the nation, having 350,000 students enrolled. Of the 23 campuses, 37,000 staff and faculty, andwith a budget of $4 billion in the UC system, Humboldt State University, is one of only two accredited forestry schools in the state (UC Berkeley being the other) and is home to the Redwood Science Laboratory which is the major repository for knowledge of the redwood forest ecosystem.
In mid-1991, Munitz admitted to the Orange County Register that he continued to own large amounts of stock in MAXXAM.
1991. MAXXAM's President, John Seidl, is selected to be a vice president of the Board of Directors of the Nature Conservancy. Seidl resigned from MAXXAM in 1992.
Recently 2 key occurences have happened. After 8 years in the Regents, Barry went on to join the Getty Fund where finally enough corporate inappropriateness got him in big trouble.
February 9, 2006
LOS ANGELES: The Board of Trustees of the J. Paul Getty Trust announced today that Dr. Barry Munitz, President and CEO for the past eight years, has decided to resign, effective immediately.
"Barry Munitz joined the Getty as CEO at a critical time. The Getty Center had just opened and Barry worked diligently to define our strategic priorities and expand collaboration among the Getty's four program areas."
In 2004, Dr. Munitz was named Chairman of California's new P-16 Education Council, which is tasked with advising the State Superintendent of Public Education on the articulation and coordination of educational reform from pre-school through college.
The Irascible Professor was a bit taken aback to learn that Barry Munitz, former California State University Chancellor and former President and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust, has decided to return to the California State University System as a "Trustee Professor". This sinecure entitles him to a "transitional salary" of $163,776 for his first year along with funds for a half-time secretary and a $2,500 travel budget. This has to be quite a come down for Munitz, who was living large on a salary that exceeded $1 million per year during the eight years he headed the Getty Trust and purchases of stolen Italian antiquities by the Getty during his tenure.
Those of who suffered under Munitz's heavy-handed leadership of the California State University system were not surprised to see him run into trouble at the Getty. http://irascibleprofessor.com/comments-05-03-06.htm
A Getty Trust Trustee - "First John Walsh left, then Stephen Rountree [executive vice president and chief operating officer], then Barbara Whitney. The last straw is Deborah Gribbon. I see this as part of a deliberate and deeply troubling purge of the best and the brightest people in the field."

It's like Utah Phillips said to a graduating class of bright young minds: "You are about to be called America's most valuable natural resource. Have you seen what they do to valuable natural resources? Have you seen a stripmine, have you seen a clearcut in the forest. They're gonna stripmine your soul, they're gonna clearcut your best thoughts for the sake of profit unless you learn to resist, cause the profit system follows the path of least resistance."
Subject: THUGGERY
From Barbara Stephens Leallen, 080809: Mendocino Sea Vegetable Company
Thugs is a good word to describe the gang of Mafioso's. There is a lot of money to be made with cute otters and words like 'ocean protection'. These people have hit the jackpot and want to milk it for what it's worth. They are banking off this money and want to keep it rolling in from the corporations and private interest groups. You know the ones, they collect thousands from cute otter pictures.
Wednesdays Aug. 5th, 2009 fish & game meeting woke me up to what is happening to our public offices, to our government that is suppose to be a peoples government. Yes Erie, I have looked into the face of fascism in action. Five men sat in front of a room full of hard working people, who got up early and traveled miles to plead for their livelihood and harvesting rights to these 'Mafioso thugs'.
One commissioner named Rogers sat there grinning and arrogantly told of his playing on the ocean since he was a little boy and dared anyone of these fishermen and harvesters to be better at knowing the ocean than he was. We had to listen to this unprofessional 'water boy' rant, this mean spirited behavior, as he prepared to take away forever peoples livelihood and harvesting rights from the north central coast. That's right, they thumbed their noses in our faces.
Wednesday's fish and game commissioners meeting was the most disgusting, head game I have ever seen played out. Imagine that, allowing Rogers to behave that way!!! Imagine that, putting in a MLPA Blue Ribbon Task Force guy (Don Benninghoven) to fill a recently vacant commissioners seat and vote on our livelihood without ever having listen to us before. Imagine that, a fish & game commissioner (Michael Sutton) who works for the very people who are paying for the mlpai process.
Imagine this, I will not rest until the truth comes out and these people eat their own words.

SMASH THE MLPA-I
MPA's don't protect marine resources from pollution, or oil exploration/drilling, seabed development,
aquaculture, industrialization of coastal waters, or militarization, just food gathering.
