Jackson Demonstration State Forest
Here are a few links to a brief and recent history of locally sustainable citizen involvement, which challenged and brought to an end the fraudulent forest management by CDF and the BOF(Board of Forestry); millions of dollars in trees cut annually were at stake, and corporate welfare forest practices. The use of toxics in and around recreation camps and sites, and logging of Old Growth galvanized Mendocino citizens and visitors to the county alike. A favorite example: Concerning a new management plan required by law, CDF did everything it could locally to keep the public meeting hush hush.
It worked
Seventeen folks showed up. Most were already familiar with the State Forest, it's importance in landscape dynamics and economics, watershed analysis, and the Corporate Welfare Timber Harvest Plan (THP) review process.
Some of us decided to have our own 'public meeting' which CDF refused to attend but which drew a crowd of 225 just two weeks later. We used the same wall size maps as CDF and the same data. Public input was gathered and delivered into the record. Logging, equestrian, off road(ORV) & motor-cross, hunting, cycling, recreational interests and historical sites preservation, written comments from kids to elders - all were recorded and presented officially into the record.
